These desks utilize motors and lifting columns to move the tabletop vertically, a process during which they may encounter obstacles such as chairs, cabinets, walls, or other objects. Failure to stop the desk promptly during descent could result in damage to the desk itself, equipment, or even injury to the user. Consequently, safety design has become a crucial aspect of product development. The current light industry standard, QB/T 5271-2018 *Electric Height-Adjustable Desks*, outlines requirements regarding vertical stability, structural strength, the durability of the lifting mechanism, obstacle-detection retraction, and electrical safety; this standard applies to desks intended for both office and home use.
Anti-collision protection is a key feature in the safety design of electric height-adjustable desks. It relies on controllers, motor feedback signals, and sensors within the lifting columns to detect abnormal resistance during operation. If the desk encounters an obstacle-such as a chair or cabinet-while descending, the system detects the change in resistance, immediately halts the descent, and reverses the desk's movement to minimize collision damage. QB/T 5271-2018 explicitly requires that, upon encountering an obstacle, the desk must be capable of reversing direction and establishing a safety clearance of (20 ± 10) mm. This design helps mitigate the risk of crushing or impact injuries and protects equipment placed on the desk, such as computers and monitors.
Beyond anti-collision capabilities, the overall structural integrity and electrical safety of the desk must also be considered. The desk frame and lifting columns require sufficient strength to prevent noticeable wobbling when the desk is raised; furthermore, the lifting mechanisms on both sides must remain synchronized under heavy loads to prevent the tabletop from tilting. The standard also specifies requirements for unbalanced loading; for instance, under a unilateral load of 1000 N, the height difference between the two sides of the tabletop must not exceed 5 mm. Additionally, the electrical system requires appropriate safety protections: a protection mechanism must activate if continuous operation exceeds the specified time limit, and safeguards against abnormal position signals must be implemented.
As the functionality of electric height-adjustable desks continues to expand, safety measures are evolving from simple anti-collision features toward comprehensive, multi-layered protection systems. Modern products typically incorporate comprehensive safeguards addressing upper and lower travel limits, overload and overheating protection, anti-collision retraction, and power failure handling. Some smart height-adjustable desks utilize control systems to monitor operational status and halt the motor if anomalies occur. The "Smart Home – Height-Adjustable Desk" group standard, released and implemented in 2023, includes smart functionality, intelligent control, and safety specifications within its technical requirements, signaling an increasing integration of safety design with smart control technology in these desks.
